Selwyn, NZ.- «El señor Askin ha ofrecido un servicio extraordinario a nuestro país durante su vida y sé que se le echará mucho de menos». Estas eran las palabras de la diputada neozelandesa por Selwyn, y ministra de Justicia, Amy Adams, lamentando el fallecimiento de este piloto de extinción de incendios, Steve Askins a los 38 años de edad. El fuego en cuatro días ya ha calcinado casi 2.000 Has. en la zona de Port Hills. Era el día de San Valentín, 14 de febrero de 2017.
Askins además de ser instructor de helicópteros, es considerado en Nueva Zelanda como un héroe al participar en la Guerra de Afganistán sirviendo en el 1er Regimiento Aéreo de los Servicios Especiales de Nueva Zelanda. Fue herido y distinguido entonces por su «excepcional valentía» en varias misiones, según el portavoz del Ministerio de Defensa, interviniendo en el rescate de unos huéspedes de un hotel, y resultando herido entonces. Fue condecorado la segunda distinción militar en NZ.
Seguimos releyendo las noticias y el seguimiento que se ha hecho de este suceso en Nueva Zelanda. Nos encontramos algo que es común en los países anglosajones, como es la parte «práctica» como es la reparación material inmediata a sus familiares. Sus ex-compañeros militares han iniciado la recaudación de fondos para la familia de Steve. Ya llevan recaudados casi 40.000 $ (tú también puedes contribuir AQUI), casi 500 donaciones ya han sido hechas efectivas.

Steve Askin, the helicopter pilot who died fighting the Canterbury fires on Valentine’s Day was an extraordinary man and a devoted father and friend. He was also an outstanding soldier and a comrade who had the readiness to sacrifice his all for anyone, without judgement or prejudice. His ultimate sacrifice is only a part of a life filled with heroic actions, selfless dedication and extraordinary commitment to the betterment of us all. His family needs our support now! There is little we can do to ease the pain, but we can preserve his legacy and help secure a tiny bit of peace for his beloved family. All for One!
The intent of this fundraiser is to help alleviate financial stress on the family, in the light of the unexpected and tragic loss of Steve.
Funds will be used for the following, and could be used for anything else the family requires at this difficult time:
-Any immediate expenses, living expenses and home repairs/maintenance etc.
-Continual support for Steve’s childrens education.
