(Gran Bretaña es el único país europeo que tiene parcialmente privatizado el sistema de tráfico aéreo). Aircraft at standProspect and PCS – the unions representing workers in NATS – the National Air Traffic Service – have been campaigning against the planned sell-off of the government stake in NATS. The state currently holds a 49% share, Forty MPs have signed an early day motion urging the government not to proceed. (PROSPECTATSS.org)
The UK is the only country in Europe with a partially privatised air traffic control system. We believe that a full sale would lead to greater instability with an increased emphasis on profit and short term dividends coming into conflict with NATS safety and other duties. There is also a question mark over whether a totally profit driven company would continue research into environmentally better ways of managing air traffic control.
On 6th February, The Observer reported that The Airline Group which owns 42% of NATS – and says the system is a key strategic asset which should not be fully privatised. The Airline Group is a consortium of airlines : British Airways, Virgin, BMI, Easy Jet, Monarch, Thomas Cook, and Tui Travel which includes Thomsons.
Prospect and PCS and are urging people to write to their MPs asking them to oppose the sale and to sign early day motion 991 – a type of parliamentary petition.
